Ever since robots took the places of four German guys in red shirts and black ties, critics have considered electronic music to be a faceless genre devoid of the celebrities that infest the overground landscape of popular music. But if the producers of Richie Hawtin: Pioneers of Electronic Music are to be believed, the techno underground has always had its own superstar with Richie Hawtin, the legendary DJ who throws eight-hour bacchanalia when not starting up seminal techno labels like Plus 8 and Minus, or secluding himself in his studio as the minimal techno innovator best known as Plastikman. At the very least, Pioneers of Electronic Musicthe first volume in a series of DVD documentaries, with the next volume spotlighting Underground Resistance; regards Hawtin as someone noteworthy enough to warrant the standard documentary package. But as if keeping with the minimalist aesthetics of Hawtin’s Plastikman project, the narrative of Pioneers of Electronic Music is bare, though not to the same effect of the best of his music.

With help from the talking heads of family, friends, peers, and the (plastik)man himself, Pioneers of Electronic Music is a hagiographic document that succinctly traces Hawtin’s life, from the English-born musician’s formative years in Windsor, Ontario, with countless trips across the border to Detroit to immerse himself in its flourishing yet underground techno scene, to his current abode in Berlin. During his Windsor/Detroit years, he apprenticed under techno stalwart Jeff Mills and rubbed elbows with Derrick May, which eventually bore Hawtin’s Plastikman project, and, after a brief exile from the US during the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, and later a stopover in New York, the film ends with Richie das Berliner, where the mature Hawtin, at the behest of trance German DJ Sven Väth ironically chucks his cerebral image for Dionysian indulgence, e.g., stagediving at his DJ gigs, or spinning at Ibiza, of all places. (In one of the bonus interviews included on the DVD, Väth takes credit for convincing Hawtin to ditch his once-trademark glasses for contact lenses.)

Insight-wise, that’s about it for the documentary. Although Pioneers of Electronic Music historicizes Hawtin’s early career, devoting more than half of the screen-time to rep for the original Detroit crews that created techno. It glosses over both the controversy of a white kid bringing the originally black art form to suburban white kids, and the fact that he was hated by the Detroit establishment for getting what seemed like, according to Mays, “opportunities and advantages that others didn’t get.” At the most, the film says that Hawtin kept the techno fire burning in Detroit while Mills, Mays, et al were DJing in Europe.

What’s more, the film all but ignores the post-millennial electronic landscape, especially glaring because of Hawtin’s integral role in shaping microhouse (the music that all the cool German kids listen to today). Even stranger, the documentary excludes almost his entire musical output after the ambient Concept series, relegating a few of his post-’98 compositions to the soundtrack. Thus, no mention of the two Plastikman albums (Consumed and Artifakts [BC]) most influential to microhouse and barely any exposition about his DE9 series. Music as a topic dissolves from the film, and merely contextualizes Hawtin’s new social life, wherein he picnics in the park with musician friends instead of secluding himself in a studio to obsess over a 4/4 beat.

And on the subject of Hawtin’s obsessiveness, the documentary-proper barely even mentions the vaunted perfectionism and the microscopic ear for sound that made his music appealing to clubbers and armchair listeners alike. His perfectionism is mentioned, almost in passing, in the bonus interview with Hawtin’s mother. She recounts how little Richie would hole up in his home studio installed beneath his parents’ bedroom: she and his father were kept awake till three or four in the morning as they listened to him composing “the same old beats, the same old beats,” clearly a minimalist even then. “Dah-dah dah-dah,” she reenacts for the camera, “dah-dah dah-dah, dah-dah dah-dah-DAH.” Though she failed to find such experiences “too much fun at all”, that didn’t stop her from lending her son a hand as a doorman at some of his warehouse parties. On more than one occasion, Mrs. Hawtin had to turn away uninvited partiers who tried to get in by claiming that they were a cousin or even his brother.

Other bonus interviews on the DVD are more hit-and-miss. Väth, John Aquaviva, and May are among the people featured in these interviews, all of whom also appear in the documentary-proper. Aquaviva, who frequently collaborates with Hawtin, recounts how his Italian heritage helped a young Hawtin learn to appreciate food, while May explains his tense relationship with Hawtin as the latter essentially being “the same motherfucker” as the Detroit legend. The bonus material on Pioneers of Electronic Music is rounded out by grainy footage of a live gig from ‘90 that he performed as Cybersonik with Aquaviva, and an extremely dated video (read: bad CGI) for the Plastikman track “Plastique”.

At its core, Richie Hawtin: Pioneers of Electronic Music strives to establish its subject as an Important Musician Worthy of Memorializing, and as a result, the film becomes more of a valentine to Hawtin than a document into his life. But while its viewers are left out as mere spectators into this exercise in onanism, the incidental details that seep through the film—such as his robotics engineer dad designing some of the equipment he uses onstage—warm up the austere minimalist so that techno is finally given a real human face, however fleeting its glimpse.

This week’s podcast is sixty minutes of minimal and dub techno from Scottish talent Alex Smoke.

As a producer, Alex Smoke is a makes electronic records that blur together European minimalism, pop structures and emotional strings and pads. He has released two full length albums, ‘Incommunicado’ and 'Paradolia' [Soma Records] and a slew of singles and remixes, including RA’s runner-up remix of 2006 ‘In the Morning’.

His electronic debut arrived in 2002, but Smoke has always been immersed in music. In his youth he sang in a choir for four years (a far cry no doubt from his mournful tones on tracks such as ‘Don’t See the Point’ or ‘Never Want to See You Again’) and he has classical training in cello and piano (check ‘Prima Materia’ for the influence.)

Smoke’s own productions are often described as moody, a reputation he doesn’t shy away from. His debut on Soma was the euphoric ‘Chica Wappa’, described by Smoke as “undoubtedly the most optimistic track I'll ever write. My music will never be this upbeat again.” His wish might have come true: recently Smoke’s work has focused heavily on melancholic electronica, although he has a noisy, brash side too, evidenced on big tracks such as ‘Meany’ and ‘Brian’s Lung’.

Out in the clubs, Smoke both DJs and performs live. His DJ agenda is perhaps best represented by ‘Sci-Fi-Hi-Fi Vol. 3’ [2006], which combined a fascination with dub techno, classic Detroit (Smoke is not adverse to playing old records at all) and new European minimal techno. Similar leanings are evident on his podcast for RA; Smoke finds space for Luciano-end minimal, German schaffel as well as a chunk of shimmering dub techno cuts.

What have you been working on recently?

Just doing as much as possible for the new label. I may put out a downtempo album as well as the usual techno 12"s. I've been doing some cooking too.

Where was the mix recorded?

My living room.

What are you up to next?

There's the classical commission previously mentioned on RA, a load of stuff for the new label and some production work for another artist.

RA.048 Dixon

Innervisions CEO Dixon puts the needle on the records in this weeks podcast.

If you don’t know the name now, you’ll know it soon enough. Berlin DJ Dixon is about to break very wide indeed, with a new mix CD ‘Body Language 4’ on Get Physical and a string of big international dates lined up for 2007. Alongside Âme, Dixon runs Innervisions, the Berlin deep house label releasing the likes of Château Flight, Stefan Goldmann, Atjazz, Tokyo Black Star and of course Âme themselves (INNERVISIONS02 was a little track called ‘Rej’).

But Dixon has a long history behind him, including an association with jazz-house aficionados Jazzanova (he introduced the then-unknown Âme to Sonar Kollektiv) and residencies at clubs Tresor, E-Werk and WMF back in the late nineties. True house heads will know him for his ‘Off-Limits’ mix series earlier this decade, but also his remixes: He’s rejigged a long line of artists including Femi Kuti, Beanfield and Taxi. Look out for new Dixon edits of Ben Westbeech, FBI Project, Outlines and Tokyo Black Star soon.

As a DJ, Dixon has been refining his craft at his monthly Innercity party at Weekend, one of the best nights on the Berlin calendar. The results speak for themselves: For his RA podcast, Dixon lays down a mix that rethinks soulful vocals and deep house to dazzling effect.

What have you been working on recently?
I just finished the Body Language CD for Get Physical. Besides that I worked hard on the Wahoo album set to be released June this year and several remixes and edits (Ben Westbeech, Anane, Voom Voom, FBI Project, Outlines, Tokyo Black Star).

Where was the mix recorded?
On the road.

What are you up to next?
Doing some remixes, compiling the new Yoga Sessions (G-Stone) and also working on Innervisions Orchestra.

Vince Watson - RA Podcast #047

This week's podcast is sixty minutes of lush pads and Detroit hypnotism from Glasgow's Vince Watson.

Vince Watson might have been gathering steam recently, but he’s always been a producer with broad appeal. He’s rated by harder techno DJs such as Carl Cox and Christian Smith, he’s released house music on Ibadan and NRK (the classic ‘Mystical Rhythm’), and his latest records have come out on Detroit-centric labels such as Planet E (‘Renaissance’) and Delsin (the longplayer ‘The eMotion Sequence’). “I try and make all my sets a journey through different elements of my music,” Watson told RA. “I don't just write techno. I just write music, and want people to listen to it as music, nothing more nothing less. I'm not a genre freak.”

Watson also runs his own record label Bio Music, which has released the likes of Steve Rachmad, Joris Voorn, Deetron and Ben Sims. Now there are some names that might clue you in to where he’s coming from: He might be Detroit-influenced, but he’s European and forward-thinking about it too (Yes, the Detroit/Glasgow axis does exist!) But maybe rather than genre, perhaps the key to Watson’s sound is his unique instrumentation: his music is characterised by strong, complex keyboard arrangements which gather momentum, and expanse, over time to hypnotic and highly danceable effect. He also has great taste in natural scientists: Sir David Attenborough is his number one MySpace friend.

For his RA mix, Watson has assembled sixty minutes of music refreshingly free of the fly-by-night techno trends; it’s a live mix full of lush pads, Detroit touches and Watson’s own unique sense of harmony. This one flies by real quick.

RA caught up with Vince Watson for a chat when he handed over his mix.

What have you been working on recently?
I've been getting into the heart of my Fcom album, which has been taking a long time. I wanted to do a project that was very Fcom but showed a different side to my music that some people may not have heard before. I'm also recording the next Planet E single and recording a single for the UR guys for Submerge Recordings. I also have a remix coming out soon on Kompakt's new sub-label 'Orphanear' for Mute records artist Turner.

Where was the mix recorded?
The mix was recorded live at my new studio, Biocom 2 – all new refittted and new setup. This mix is exclusive and will not be performed anywhere like this. It includes some unsigned, unfinished and unreleased material as well as the cuts that are on the streets at the moment.

What are you up to next?
Musicwise, I'm doing a remix swap with Laurent Garnier, who will be remixing a track from my Delsin album 'The eMotion Sequence'. Gigwise, I'm off to Brazil shortly for my yearly visit, playing for the Circuito guys new club 'Clash' which has just opened. I'll also be appearing at Kozzmozz in Belgium next month and I'm also putting the fine details onto an Australia and New Zealand tour for this OZ summer in late November.

RA.046 Tim Sweeney

Tim Sweeney is the host of Beats in Space, a weekly New York radio show that transmits via the airwaves and Internet. The two and half hour show has attracted a strong international following with the crème-de-la-crème of dance music popping in to record sessions each Tuesday: guests have included Carl Craig, Superpitcher, Chateau Flight, Optimo, Erol Alkan and Lindstrom. These days Sweeney himself is also a DJ on the circuit; he left his day job scoring soundtracks to video games (‘Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas’ is his) to DJ full-time, gigging across Europe, North and South America and Australia. Though Sweeney finds himself on an international flight nearly every weekend, he still hasn’t lost sight of his initial passion. “Week in and week out, I’m still back in New York on Tuesday to record the show,” says Sweeney. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Sweeney is hooked into a variety of New York music circles. He works with the DFA crew, touring with James Murphy as well as collaborating with Tim Goldsworthy; he’s released a mix on Rvng Intl, he’s co-produced music with xxxchange, best known for his work with Spank Rock, and he even opened for DJ Shadow with his pal Steinski back in the day.

Musically, Sweeney runs the gamut, drawing on hip-hop, rare disco, old Detroit techno, rock, funk and soul for inspiration. For his RA Podcast, Sweeney promises a disco vibe and a New York feel as well as unreleased tracks from the likes of The Juan Maclean, TNT and Holy Ghost! “I did one mix that was much harder and clubbier, but I just got bored with it by the end,” says Sweeney. “So I did this mix as a kind of response to that. It’s just a lot of fun.”

What have you been working on recently?
I'm doing a new production and DJ project with Tim Goldsworthy from DFA under the name TNT. We've got a 12" coming out in June on one of the Mule Musiq labels and then another one due later in the year with some new tracks we're working on.

I'm constantly working on the Beats In Space radio show as well. Look out for upcoming guest mixes from Tako, Loud-E, Lovefingers, JG Wilkes (Optimo), Phil South (No Ordinary Monkey), Will Saul, Andy Butler, and Lee Douglas to name a few.

Where was the mix recorded?
It was recorded live at club LaBeija in New York on February 16th, 2007. It's fierce!

What are you up to next?
Trying to DJ as much as possible.

RA.045 Joakim

French electro/jazz/mutant-disco hero Joakim.

Joakim is a hard man to pin down. One of France’s foremost electronic musicians, he has a background in classical music, US & UK indie rock and jazz. His first album ‘Tiger Sushi’ was ambient electro-jazz, before he moved onto electronics with ‘Fantômes’ [2003], and more recently ‘Monsters and Silly Songs’, on which he combines post-rock, disco, electronics and, well, silly songs. "Making a pure dance album would almost be like composing an album entirely in F major,” says Joakim. “I jump from one idea to the next. I simply have to try everything and see where it leads."

Joakim runs the Tigersushi label, releases a broad spectrum of music including Maurice Fulton, E.S.G, Poni Hoax and Metro Area. He’s also a remixer; he’s recut tunes from Tiga, Air and most recently Antena’s ‘Camino Del Sol’ - the latter of which was one of the biggest club tunes of 2006. Finally, he also has a live band, Joakim and the Ectoplasmic Band, on which he plays machines, keyboards, guitars and sings. Fingers in many pies then.

Out in the clubs, Joakim does both live sets and DJs, but for his RA podcast, Joakim has put together a rollercoaster turntable set which shifts between electro, mutant disco, techno and even a bit of New jack swing – all in Joakim’s inimitable style. RA sat down with Joakim with a couple of questions:

What have you been working on recently?
About one million things. Remixing Klaxons, Simian Mobile Disco, New Young Pony Club..., recording new Panico and Poni Hoax songs, playing live and DJing, promoting my album, recording this podcast. Just homework...

Where was the mix recorded?
At home. 11-02-2006. It's mostly club-orientated.

What are you up to next?
Touring the UK next week and then the rest of the world with my band, mixing Poni Hoax album and working with Sir Alice. Preparing the release of new Tigersushi artist My Sister Klaus. Or maybe I will just take holidays.
