Happy 4:20 to All Funky Ppl out TherE!!!!!

High Holy Day for Potheads

*[a lil bit of kulture]*

What is 420? What does 4 20 or 4:20 mean? What is 420's origin-history?

Only the real hip hop partiers, rap artists, true herbal smoke lovers and four twenty pot heads will enjoy partaking in their favourite buzz at this time. Four hundred and twenty is fast becoming the secret code to anything to do with marijuana terminology, cannabis culture, and underground weed smokers. Discover what certain four twenty wall graffiti means. Find out what hip hop artists are communicating.

Every kid uses slang and nicknames so their parents don't know what they're saying or smoking. 420 has developed into a new slang, rap, culture covering a wide variety of social backgrounds. Come on in and check out all the phat phrases and nicknames.

Read on to learn the myths, the truth about the origin and what this term means for parents. Known Myths

* Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420.
-The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.

* There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana.
-Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.

* April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.
-Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin.

* April 20th is Hitler's birthday.
-Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

* The date of the Columbine school shootings.
- This happened after the term was already in use.

* 4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.
-Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.

While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers. A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." Fortunately, your teenagers will not have that same option.

What does 420 friendly mean?
This is a way to express the acceptance of smoking pot or accepting somone who does so, without overtly mentioning pot or marijuana. You may find the phrase 420-friendly often in personal adds. It refers to the term 420 which has become lingo smoking pot.

420 - 4: 20 and Pulp Fiction : Directed by Quentin Tarantino There is a persistent myth that that all the clocks in the movie are set to 4:20 (although, certainly all the clocks on the wall in the pawn shop are set to 4:20). However, in at least two scenes it is obvious that this is not the case. In the "Bonnie Situation" while Jimmy, Vince and Jules are drinking coffee in the kitchen, the clock clearly reads 8:15. Secondly, when Vince and Jules go to retrieve the briefcase, it is "7:22 in the a.m.". The significance of the time 4:20 is that it is slang for smoking marijuana. More Pulp Fiction >>

420 Campaign

The widespread popularity of 4/20 celebrations in the U.S. has brought about calls advocating for the reform of American marijuana laws. The 420 Campaign urges individuals to become involved in the political process and the drug policy reform movement. Specifically, the Campaign calls for leveraging "April 20th as a focal point every year to concentrate pressure on Congress to legalize marijuana."[6] In addition to contacting state and national legislators, people can take action by supporting organizations—such as NORML and MPP—that represent the interests of marijuana users and other concerned citizens.

RA.052 Alexander Robotnick

Published / 09 April 2007
Filesize / 97.74 MB
Length / 01:21:25

This week’s podcast is a selection from electro godfather Alexander Robotnick.

Robotnick has had a long and colorful history, including scoring films in the eighties and joining a world music troupe in the nineties, but he’s most celebrated for his pioneering electro tracks such as ‘Problèmes D'Amour’ from 1983. “When I first made the track, I was Italian and I didn’t speak English. I was a really provincial man from Italy,” Robotnick told Jonty Skrufff in 2005. “So I was aware of the quality of the track but I didn’t believe it would get successful at all.” It did, becoming one of the cult classics of the genre. Fast forward twenty years and when a younger generation of musicians revived Italo and electro, and paid tribute to Robotnick in their mixes, Robotnick had a change of heart, putting aside ambient and world music to return to electro in 2001. First out of the block was the artist album ‘Oh no…Robotnick’ and the mix compilation ‘The Disco Tech of...Alexander Robotnick’ [2005], the success of which encouraged Robotnick to embark upon a rather belated new career as a DJ/live act. But it wasn’t quite a return to the old school: After years of hating vinyl, Robotnick bought a laptop and got back into the club act with Ableton Live and a unique DJ act/live show that’s been popular at nights throughout Europe, America and Japan.

Today Alexander Robotnick still lives in the Italian countryside. He even sent his mix to the RA office via post, because “they don’t have broadband where I live.” But there’s nothing provincial about his mix, which stitches together acid, electro, eighties pop and even a bit of progressive in a timeless and hugely fun fashion.

Her diverse audio tour includes tracks from the infamous Detroit techno innovators Carl Craig and Plastikman, Germany’s funky minimal Bookashade, David Bowie’s German rendition of Heroes (Helden) & Ellen’s own track from her latest release Orchestra of Bubbles.

A hometown hero, Ellen Allien started the BPitch Control Party Series and founded the ubercool label BPitch Control Records. On her 2 hour-plus DVD, Ellen shows you her personal Other Side of the city she knows and loves.

With the Other Side, a new generation of immersive travel guide is upon us. Deaf Dumb & Blind Communications, a new progressive and multi-faceted entertainment company, teams up with internationally recognized travel guidebook and weekly magazine publisher Time Out to produce a series called The Other Side — an CD/DVD experience that submerses its listeners/viewers entirely below the city’s surface.

Each volume of The Other Side boasts two key elements: a mixed CD compiled by a native audio pioneer and a DVD guide that acts as a visual handbook for both the seasoned traveler and armchair adventurer alike. While some travel guides aim to be comprehensive, The Other Side isn’t concerned. It simply wants its user to enjoy and discover the very best and coolest in sight and sounds. It whispers in the user’s ear advice on where to go and what to see — and it does it with unprecedented style and flair.

RA.051 Redshape

Published / 02 April 2007
Filesize / 80.82 MB
Length / 01:07:20

This week's podcast is a live set from the masked man of techno: Redshape.

We would tell you all about Redshape, but we don’t know who he actually is. He hides his real identity behind a red mask at all times, even wearing it onstage at his club dates around Europe, which of late there have been many. We do know the man behind the mask lives in Berlin, he does a rocking live act and he’s released half a dozen tracks over the last year on labels such as Delsin, Styrax Leaves and Music Man. We also hear rumours that behind the mask might be the face of a very famous producer indeed, but don't ask us who - we haven't quite worked it out yet. But we can reveal that Redshape has studied a lot of Detroit techno records: His sound is a new update on old school templates, and it's getting a thorough rinsing by DJs as diverse as Laurent Garnier, Josh Wink, Âme and Cassy.

For his RA podcast, Redshape delivers a live set fresh off the mini disc recorded at Dissonanze in Rome, Italy. Expect an otherworldly take on improvised techno with a few dark and surprising turns.

And if one weekend you see a masked man hanging out in the alley behind your local club, don’t call the police, it’s probably just Redshape psyching himself up to go on stage.

RA chatted to Red when he handed over the mix.

What have you been working on recently?
For the last few weeks I've been really busy working on my live PA. It was more practicing than preparing as I don’t prepare any details like breakdowns or mixes beforehand. My plan is to do a recordable jam session which is kinda organic and never really the same in any of its components while still sounding straight. So that took some time recently.

Where was the mix recorded?
It was performed live at Bancaleone Club in Rome, Italy at a party was called Dissonanze. I played together with Cristian Vogel who delivered a really cool freaky bleepy set that evening.

What are you up to next?
Production, production, production. Time to try out some new gear I’ve got and probably looking in the direction of an album maybe. We'll see.

RA.050 Ripperton

Published / 23 March 2007
Filesize / 89.50 MB
Length / 01:14:33

This week on the pod is Swiss DJ and producer Ripperton.

Raphaël Ripperton is one half of Lazy Fat People, but he’s not fat and he’s definitely not lazy. Productivity-wise, he gives John Dahlback a run for his money: He’s been DJing since 1993, he’s played in bands (Soul Merge, Reasons), he runs a record label (Perspectiv), and he’s produced and remixed an endless run of 12”s over the last couple of years. As Lazy Fat People (with his pal Mirko Loco) he has put out singles on Border Community, Wagon Repair and most recently on Carl Craig’s Planet E label. Solo, Ripperton has released on Connaisseur, Crosstown Rebels (as Rayon), Num and Liebe*detail and he has remixed the likes of Patrick Chardronnet, Radio Slave and Spencer Parker. You get the idea – he’s a busy guy. He also finds the time to maintain a cool blog.

As a DJ, Ripperton spins the melodic and lush end of minimal techno, and for his RA podcast, he’s put together 75 minutes that makes space for a bit of dreaminess between house and techno. Listen out for unreleased tracks from Perspectiv Records also, including an Agnès remix of Masaya’s 'El Choquero' [Perspectiv 6] and 'We are the New Me' by Minz [Perspectiv 4]. If this is the evidence, Ripperton’s label is on the up and up.

What have you been working on recently?

I started my own label six months ago with Sam K called Perspectiv Records. With brilliants nu talents like Ndru, Sam K, Minz, Masaya, Lucy & the killer funkman Agnès. This year I have released three new 12"s: ‘Narrow Minded EP’ on Connaisseur, ‘A Skilift Upstairs the Sleeping City’ on Systematic and ‘10a’ on Liebe*detail. Plus a new Lazy Fat People EP (with Loko) on Carl Craig's Planet E label.

Where was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded live in a hidden place in Lausanne. It's a special mix full of new deep 12"s & unreleased stuff. Hope you enjoy!

What are you up to next?

I’m working on remixes for Shinedoe (Intacto), Robert Babicz (Systematic), Lee Van Dowski (Num), Alex Attias's Catalyst (Freedom Soundz) and Daniela Stickroth & Ercolino (Meerestief). I'm also working with Agnès on a new live project and releases. The next Lazy Fat People is coming out on Perspectiv with a remix by 2000 & One. We have also done some remixes for Undo (Factor city) and The Viewers (Audiomatique). In the next month I'm touring a lot across Europe & going to Japan.
